Originally launched in March 2025 by a Chinese AI startup, Manus gained viral attention for its ability to browse the web, write and run code, analyze data, manage files, and compile deliverables with minimal human oversight. In January 2026, Meta acquired Manus for approximately $2 billion, signaling a major shift in the agentic AI landscape. At its core, Manus operates as an execution layer on top of large language models. Rather than relying on a single AI model, it orchestrates multiple specialized agents -- selecting from models like Claude, Qwen, and others depending on the subtask at hand. You describe what you need in plain language, and Manus breaks the work into steps: researching information online, extracting data from documents, generating reports, building simple web apps, creating slide decks, or writing code. It spins up virtual compute environments to run scripts and compile results, then delivers finished output you can review and iterate on. One notable strength is its background execution model. You can assign a task, walk away, and return to a completed deliverable. Manus also supports mid-task intervention, letting you redirect the agent if it veers off course. It remembers your preferences and instructions across sessions, which improves over time. However, Manus comes with significant caveats. Its credit-based pricing system is widely criticized for being opaque and expensive. Complex tasks can consume 500 to 900 credits in a single run, and there is no upfront cost estimate before a task begins. The Plus plan at $39 per month provides roughly 3,900 credits, which may only cover four or five complex tasks. Credits are consumed even when tasks fail or produce incomplete results, and unused monthly credits do not roll over. Reliability is another concern. Multiple reviewers report that Manus struggles with edge cases, sometimes producing incomplete or inaccurate output that requires reruns. Tasks can fail when they exceed context window limitations, and the platform offers a limited set of native integrations compared to competitors. For straightforward, repeatable workflows like research compilation, data extraction, and report generation, Manus performs well. For complex multi-tool business workflows, it remains unpredictable. Manus is best suited for solopreneurs, freelancers, and small teams who need hands-off automation for focused, well-defined tasks. It is not yet reliable enough for mission-critical enterprise workflows where consistency and predictability are non-negotiable.
