Shopify Agentic Storefronts make every merchant's product catalog automatically discoverable inside AI conversations on ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, and the Gemini app. Launched March 24, 2026, this isn't a plugin you install or an API you integrate. If you're on Shopify, your products are already showing up when someone asks ChatGPT 'what's a good running shoe under $150.'
The system works through Shopify Catalog, which feeds structured product data -- titles, descriptions, pricing, real-time inventory -- directly to AI platforms. When a shopper discovers your product in ChatGPT, they click through to complete the purchase on your storefront via an in-app browser (mobile) or new tab (desktop). You remain the merchant of record. You keep the customer relationship and data. Orders flow back to your Shopify Admin with ChatGPT referral attribution so you can track what's converting from AI channels.
The business model is clean: Shopify charges no additional transaction fees beyond standard processing rates. OpenAI takes a 4% fee on sales completed through ChatGPT checkout. That's the only extra cost. No monthly fee for the feature, no app subscription, no revenue share with Shopify beyond what you already pay.
Shopify also launched an 'Agentic plan' for brands not on Shopify's ecommerce platform. If you sell through BigCommerce, WooCommerce, or your own stack, you can still add products to Shopify Catalog and get discovered across these AI channels. This is Shopify's play to become the commerce infrastructure layer for all AI shopping, not just its own merchants.
The infrastructure backbone is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), co-developed with Google, with support from Walmart, Target, Etsy, American Express, Mastercard, Stripe, and Visa. AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores is up 7x since January 2025, and this feature is designed to accelerate that curve.
The honest limitation: you have minimal control over how AI surfaces your products. There's no bidding system, no SEO optimization for AI discovery, and no way to boost your listing within ChatGPT. Your structured data quality is the only lever -- clean product titles, detailed attributes, and accurate inventory are what AI favors. Merchants with sloppy catalogs will be invisible.
