Windsurf is the AI-native code editor that broke the VS Code monopoly on AI coding. Instead of forking one editor, Windsurf built plugins for 40+ IDEs: JetBrains (IntelliJ, PyCharm, WebStorm), Vim, NeoVim, XCode, and its own standalone editor. If you have a preferred IDE, Windsurf works inside it. The headline feature is SWE-1.5, Windsurf's proprietary coding model. It runs at 950 tokens per second on Cerebras hardware with sub-100ms time-to-first-token. For comparison, Claude Sonnet 4.5 processes roughly 70 tokens per second. SWE-1.5 is 13x faster. That speed powers Cascade, Windsurf's autonomous coding agent that handles multi-step tasks end-to-end: writing functions, adding tests, updating imports, fixing lint errors. Windsurf switched from credits to quota-based pricing on March 19, 2026. The Pro plan costs $20/month with daily and weekly quota refreshes. All Windsurf proprietary models (SWE-1, SWE-1.5, SWE-1-mini, swe-grep) consume zero quota. Third-party models like Claude and GPT are available but eat into your allowance faster. SWE-grep is the retrieval engine underneath. It searches your codebase 10x faster than traditional code search, giving Cascade the context it needs without you having to manually select files. Combined with automatic context detection from open files, terminal output, and recent changes, Cascade often understands what you need before you finish typing. The limitation: if you are a VS Code power user with dozens of extensions, Cursor's fork gives you closer compatibility.
